RADIO TRAVEL TO CRETE & EDXC 2010 ANKARA

I am travelling again ! First stop in Crete at the seaport of Sitia
located 140 km far from Heraklion airport, going to east coast.
Yesterday I took 3 jetplanes from Milano to Munich, from Munich to
Athens and from Athens to Heraklion .... In the first flight AIR DOLOMITEN ! I listened just 15 minutes before to land 103,1 MHz Radio Capodistria in Italian .... a real surprise !
In the second flight going to Athens, the flight passed on Adriatic sea coast, so I got many stations from Italy starting from Radio Bruno 93.0 MHz Monte Cimone in Emilia area, FM stations from Riviera Adriatica Rimini area .....Marche....Abruzzo...Puglia ....great !
In the third flight with a VERY old airplane of Aegian Airlines I had a surprise from an ACYDULE young hostess who stopped my listenings cause on Aegian Airline old fashion airplanes is not allowed to use radiosets ....HA HA HA ....
Athens airport sounds the same as the MINOSSE castlerock !!! a real
odissea of LABIRYNT !!!!!!!! ha ha ha ....
So I landed in the little but quite organized airport of Heraklion in time 2120 hours ....and I get my baggage in green plastic save protection in 3 minutes .... yes 3 minutes !!! marked PRIORITY
and I met my personal TAXI driver Michael to take me till Sitia
with his Mercedes Car .... 140 km of normal roads with many bends
all along the coast same as Aurelia road in Liguria...
In exactly 2 hours we arrived in Sitia town ...very good driver !

The Hotel has been suggested to me by Alessandro Groppazzi who visited Sitia in 2008. The Hotel has free internet service.
Today 23 September I started to do the FM bandscan ....this is always hard problem to do it with no precedent bandscan in same place.
The FM sounds almost silent except 5 local stations, some undeclared frequencies and some spurious.... the stations in Ierapetra 28 km south arrives but with weak signals.... so I got yet some interesting stations, 2 from Israel in the morning hours, some from
Greece Egeo Sea islands Rodos, Samos, Santorini, Cycladis.
Also many from Turkey Egeo coast area from Budrum, Itzmir, down till Antalya.... more after 1600 hours UTC. Cyprus BFBS English only in morning hour.... not bad as starting....
Today the sky becomed cloudy but luckly no rains...

Yesterday evening the ADSL line of the PC in the Hotel Itanos worked very slowly for the first hour.... so I send my second report this saturday 25 September, also cause at 0800 hours here arrived from south
a quite strong storm with riders, but not so much winds, and also not so much rains.... this has been the first storm from May 2010 over Sitia !!!!. A pity cause this has cancelled the quite good FM tropo conditions to the Egeo Turkish coast, I got yesterday almost over all the day. This a first preliminary list of Turkish stations in the FM

frequency is covered by a relay of SKAI ATHENS located near SITIA

There are many many frequencies free in Sitia, but with no propagation they remain free.... probably I arrived here too late ...

I will continue to monitorate the FM band.

I have also started to control Medium Wave and the surprise is to get on 900 kHz RAI 1 Milano Siziano at 0500 UTC and at 2100 UTC ...
no interferences at these hours...

Saturday 25 September offered a great unexpected opening toward the meaddle east area, why unexpected ?
Cause at 0730 local time (0530 UTC) a summer storm arrived here in Sitia, with riders and rains, at 0900 hours it was yet gone, and the sun made the air very WET and WARM ....
However at 1200 hours I noticed on FM signals on frequencies where I did not listened before the 23 & 24 September no stations.
In fact a good Super Tropo offered a variety of FM stations :

Also 27 Sept. Monday has been an interesting day of listenings, a bright sunny day with dry panorama of the coast in front the gulf of Sitia. In the morning I have done a MW bandscan at 0430-0530 UTC the sunrise is at 0514 UTC. Predominance of signals from west, even RAI 1 Liguria on 1575 kHz was heard at S/on 0400 UTC with Mameli Hymn.
I visited the only Ipermarket in Sitia, 500 meters from my Hotel Itanos which is in the center in front of the port. 4 battery for my Radioset cost 5,40 Euro ..... a post card cost 0,25 Euro.
The Bus station of Sitia is 400 meters from my Hotel. The bus to come back to Heraklion is at 0530 local time .... 0330 UTC ! Next 30 September I will have a very early start.... hi !!!

Today FM band offered signals from Turkey Egeo coast and signals from Islands Greek of Egeo no signals from Meaddle East area....

Today here in Sitia it has been a very hot day, temperature +33C yet in the morning and a sunshine look like to be in the Giza desert !!!!
I had to go to the Bus Station 500 meters and just go/back I becomed look like a FOUNTAIN !!!! hi.
Propagation in the FM yet good at 0500 UTC !!! signals from Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus..... even new frequencies detected ....
After 1200 UTC becoming less so wide area, remaing open to Turkey Egeo & Rodos Islands ..... I really guess what will be reception in May & June with ESporadics openings ????

29 September last day of my first visit to Minoic Island of CRETE, Sitia sea port is the right place to do FM listenings if you want to listen to the stations located in Turkey Egeo Coasts, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and also Syria ! Cyprus Greek & Cyprus Turk and Rodos & Egeo Greek Islands arrives normally .... and some FM from Egypt also arrives more rarely.
The last day offered the wind called GARBIS blowin from Libic desert
...with thin sands and very hot temperatures.... yet at 0700 local time (0500 UTC) temperature in Sitia was +40 C ! a perturbated front on SIRTE GULF was coming to east and this created the high winds ....
Reception resulted very good from almost all the countries ...even from Syria I got two stations ! only missing Palestina area.
May be next time ....

Hi to everyone,
Sorry for the delay .... I am now in Milan in my QTH, the reason for the delay has been the free internet service in the Hotel Dedeman had Turks caracters and it should have been problematic write the report with many missing European caracters ..... it is true my kind friend Christian Ghibaudo offered to utilize his portable mini PC to compile the EDXC 2010 Report .....but it has so little caracters size... for me it should have needed 2 weeks time to compile the report ..... due to mine eyes.....Miopies

Well the travel from Sitia in Crete till Ankara it has been quite long but in any case very good, the Bus Sitia to Heraklion (140 km) started in time at 0530 local time (0330 UTC) price 13 Euro one way.... the Bus had many stops and in Malia tourist village on the coast it was assaulted by 21 Swiss tourists with shorts to go to visit the Knossos castle in Heraklion .... even if black clouds covered the sky....promisimg lot of rainfalls...hi

With my surprise the Bus stopped at Airport of Heraklion.... a very good surprise .....so at 0815 I was yet in the Airport .... the hall is quite large .... Aegian Airline and Olympic Airlines have large space. I packet my baggage for 3 Euro with plastic save material.

The ticketing of the flights before mine were really terribles to be seen, some serpent 500 meters longs of tourists people with giant baggages .....incredible...
Howerer I knew my ticketing flight started at 1100 hours... so I was ready at right box office.... so I had to wait just 10 minutes....
I got both places near window seat of the flight Heraklion to Athens and from Athens to Munich.... with assurances my baggage should have been despatched to Munich ....

No listenings in first flight too little time 50 minutes flight....
in reality just 20minutes time...

No problems in Athens to find the correct gate ....even if it changed 3 times !!!! the Airport organisation in Athens is a bit LAZY... hi

I listened in the flight .... FM stations in, Larissa, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, followed by stations located in Albania, with few from Puglia Martina Franca Trasmitters and ....soon many from Ex Yugo areas (Bosnia, Croazia) followed by stations in Trieste area and Austria ...... in the travel I had above my head a mini television set
showing the flight travel, very very useful to look at to see the reception areas.... later on I will do the FM Report of the FM listenings of this

The flight arrived 30 minutes later in Munich, but thanks to the very good Lufthansa ticketing office number 15 for disabled people I had not to do a 300 meters queue waiting people to send baggages.... at the main time my friend Christian Ghibaudo coming from Nice, informed me by Mobile phone of his place in the same flight, and I was able to choose the seat near his seat..26 E .. playdx organisation...
The gate H has flights to Non European EU countries look like Turkey ... gate H3 .... one of the most distants.... but finally I met Christian .... we still waited 40 minutes to go abord the flight, in reality not so many passengers to go to Ankara .... last 6 files noone !!

I listened the FM no problems from Hostess personnal, starting with
Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria from Varna coast crossing the Karediz Sea (Black Sea) and passing northern to Istanbul ..... a very long list indeed.... later on I will write the details.

Hallo to Ankara !
The flight Lufthansa arrived in perfect time, 2315 local time, 2115 UTC.
The surprise to see 2 well known Finnish DXers (one of them named Arto Mujunen I have yet met at precedents EDXC meetings), at the controll pass... very quick controll ....may be the guards were going to finish their work ??? So we agree to go all together with a yellow Taxi to the Hotel Dedeman the place of the EDXC 2010. Still open the Change office of the Airport at 2300 hours. The chariot to carry the baggages costs 2 Turkish Liras
around 1 Euro.....but you need to geave the money to a servant man... and you don't get back the liras ! hi !!!

At arrival the receptionist had a tentative to offer to me and Christian a room at second floor.... I politely asked if was available a more high floor room ... she smiled and said ...7 floor will be good for you Sir .... I said yes please... without knowning the hotel is 8 floor high ....but the 8 floor is under reneval... so in fact the 7 floor is the most high of the Hotel ... hi ! Room704 with 3 plastic cards to open the door... one for lights and electricity always inserted the others 2 to open the door.... very good service... room viewing to east sunrise .... perfect .... TV plasma with 46 channels many intinternationals .... also RAI SPORT ... not RAI 1 .... why ?? hi !!!

Friday 01 October we had a morning great buffet banquet at first floor.
More easy to tell what foods missing than the hunderds offered ...
really a great breakfast with almost 50 YL & YM camereros....

So at 0900 we met at the reception floor the 20 partecipants to the EDXC 2010 meeting and the TRT Turkey delegation, the Meeting has been organized by TRT Voice of Turkey....
Mrs. Ufuk Gecim, head of the German section welcomed us !
I enjoy the mid morning visit at Voice of Turkey headquarter. We arrived with two mini bus in around 20 minutes.

The visit was very detailled showing the radio Television Museum with original items of the Story of 40 years of TV activities....
After we went to the office of Mr. Hasan Harman, broadcast Directing Manager located at 5th floor with a great view of the outside area.
Next the visit to the Internet room service IT Section
After we went down to the 1st floor to see the differents redactions, so I met Miss Esra of the Italian Redaction
www.trtitalian.com and Miss Ambra of English www.trtenglish.com Also the Spanish section wanted to do the interview with me www.trtspanish.com so I sent greetings to the friends in Argentina and to Spain. Finally to speaks so many languages my mind becomed look like a Babel Tower ....hi !!!
Then we went to the mess hall located down floor with typical Turkish food together with the leading personnel.
In the early afternoon we transferred to the Emirlir transmission site situated about 60 Km. south to Ankara. We had a complete view of the building facilities In that Transmitting center operates 16 men with turnover to cover all the day operations. Cakes and Tea hot was served ...but luckly for me also Mineral water and iced little blocks water glaced... cause it was quite hot. I had some exchange of ideas with the Lady deputy Chief Engineer frequency controller, explaining the frequency and time of the Italian transmission can't be heard cause no propagation .... but the Lady sounded look like I was talking in Sanscrit language... hi !!!!!!!!
We returned at Hotel, quite pleased for the day spent at Voice of Turkey facilities... and we found Carpets with advertising materials with schedules, pennants, ande Turistic booklets about the beaty places located in Turkey to be seen.
The night I spent at restaurant at first floor of Hotel for a dinner A LA CARTE ... I choose Spaghetti alla Napoletana... giant quantity...
well cooked... second a vegetable mix plate and followed by ESPRESSO COFFEE ( do not keep Turkish coffee cause is horrible) and finally I discovered a liquor Turkish : MENTIS (a little glass of Green creme Turkish) Cost for me 25 Euro for this Menu.
The first day of EDXC 2010 finished in this way.

Saturday October 2nd

After a big breakfast buffet in the good Hotel Dedeman we went to the downstair saloon conference hall and at 0930 we started officially the meeting, Tibor Szilagyi opened the meeting.
“Dear DX--Friends and Conference Participants! 12 months have gone since the closure of the EDXC Confernce in Dublin / Ireland. Let me inform you what happened in the last 12 months, from the EDXC point of view.
As you probably know, the EDXC has today 12 members, 4 observer members and 4 individual members. Two individual members are from Sweden : the well--known Swedish DX--ers Claës-W. Englund and Bengt Dalhammar, furthermore Torre Ekblom from Finland and Luca Tius from Italy. During the last 12 months the number of the members were very stable. Also the membership fees were paid rather fast at the beginning of the year 2010. We are very grateful for that, being a small and very poor organization, operating with penny--like financial means.
During the preparation work for this Conference I had the pleasure to enjoy the help of the following organizations and DX-Clubs :
1. First of all I had a lot of correspondence with Drs. Mrs. Ufuk Geçim --- Head of the German section of the Voice of Turkey, die Stimme der Tuerkei. At this point I wish to express my gratitude for her kind help. As you could experience yesterday, our visit at the Radio was organized very smoothly and we had an extra-ordinary warm--hearty reception at the Radio. Thank You Dr. Ufuk Geçim for all the good work you have done for us!

2. Secondly I would like to mention the great help I got from Anker Petersen, Chairman of the Danish Shortwave Club International. He was extremely helpful at finalizing our programme for this Conference Day today. As you probably know, Anker Petersen had an eye-operation on the 22nd of September, and because of that, he cannot attend at this conference. He was scheduled to give us a lecture here on the subject: " Anker's Radio Trip to Northern Part of India and Bhutan. "

3. Last but not least I wish to express my gratitude to Risto Vähäkainu, who was always ready to give good advices and useful recommendations for this conference. We can see it again - as many, many times before - that the Finnish Delegation is the biggest one at this conference. You - Finns - you can be proud of yourselves. Thank you Risto for your kind support.

4. I also wish to mention that Dario Monferini also showed a very positive attitude for our conference and he was ready to contribute to our conference today with his own story: "2009 Radio Travelling in Russia and other Eastern European Countries. " Thank you Dario very much for that.

Risto Vähäkainu from Finland, Anker Petersen and Kaj Bredahl Joergensen from Denmark, Dario Monferini from Italy, those are the people who are always writing to me. All other DX-Clubs show a significant silence. Why is that ?

We have to discuss this during our session today: ”The future of the EDXC." I still remember the words of Torre Ekblom:

”No organization is better, than its members.”

After having said this, I wish to mention a few members, who cannot attend at this conference, but sending their greetings:

In the connection with the greetings, Alexander Beryozkin, Russia, had a greeting from (DSWCI Editor) Dmitry Mezin.
After this official start the TRT External Service Manager had some informations about the TRT Voice of Turkey External service. Mr.Turan Nurettin from TRT External Services, informed what TRT started in 1936 and was reestablish in 1943. Nowadays they are broadcasting in 32 different languages with a total of 168 hours in the foreign languages each day, and 43 hours in Turkish each day. In March 2008 they added Dari, Pashto, Uzbek, Uyghur and Armenian to their service. They have 30 languages on Internet for the time being. In the near future they will also use DRM broadcast to their service. At the moment they got about 2.500 reception reports a month and 300.000-400.000 entries each week on their WEB pages.

Next speech from Risto Vähäkainu, Finland DX Club Radio Maalma, “EDXC conferences – past, present and future” g EDXC history and the background for founding the EDXC, which took place at Ankers home. He also briefly mentioned the next conference in 2011, giving 4 possibilities : Lithuania, Sweden, Bulgaria and Washington DC, USA.

The next speaker was Toshi Ohtake, Japan SW CLUB, who had a lecture about “Japanese Radio World” seen from the Japanese point of view. Toshi also showed two slides, the first about “Good Happenings” in the world of shortwave radio, and the second about “Bad Happenings”. It was quite interesting and suggestive.


The third and last speaker was Dario Monferini, Italy who in his personal "Monferinglish" told about "2009 Radio Travelling in Russia and other Eastern European countries", with visits in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Samara, Yalta and Kiev, to mentioning a few destinations, and where he also visited some Russian DX-ers, and was DX-ing in various places on his trip. Surely the most .... unofficial and lazy speech every seen in an EDXC meeting...hi !


After 1230 hours we had the lunch at Hotel Restaurant at Turks style .... and TRT Board personnel was invited to take part, this permitted more unformal talks with them by EDXC partecipants, surely a good idea by Tibor.

At 1430 the BUS outdoor Hotel arrived to take all partecipants to the Mausoleum of Kemal Ataturks in the city center, however the going to this city place resulted very crowled by terric traffic Jam ..... why ??? Cause in Turkey they work from monday till friday and so almost everyone utilize Saturday to go to do shoppping .....
I preferred to stay in the Bus to do an FM Bandscan of the Ankara FM ..... more quiet action than to do 600 meters in the Mausoleum....
After the visit to the Kemal Ataturks museum we went to the old part of Ankara situated in the very center of Ankara, on a hill, inside an ancient castle area surrounded by a tall wall. Here the life was completely different, than in the rest of Ankara, with very old houses and narrow streets, and many real desendants of the original ITTITI people who lived in the area around 3000 years ago. The place is famous for the first Mosquee build up in Ankara in 1178 DC

The little streets do not permitted to the big Bus to enter in the old castle area.... built by Sultan....so we went by feet
walking on stones irregulars ....a real feet torture for me....hi !!! However with assistence of Christian Ghibaudo we arrived till the upper Restaurant Mirador....but surprise it was CLOSED ..... not the TOILED ...luckly !!!! hi !!!!!
In the little toutous streets many little shops ...... and many ...original ITTITI people and Childrens.... begging for money .... well not so beautiful to see this..... We found a shop selling Postcards and many little souvenirs ....
after some "discussions" I got 20 postcards for 4 Euro .....but the shopper requested to change Euro from COINS into Banknotes ...cause local Banks in Ankara do not accept coins Euro .... and many Turists prefere to pay in Euro coins...
We agree to do this "change service" quite unexpected request.... and the shopper kindly geave to me a depliant with the story of the first Mosquee of Ankara with color photos.....very kind !
After before to be back to BUS we also buy some Racine white ....for 0,50 Euro ..... unfotunatly later we tasted the
savour and it was orripilant ..... may be original from XI century ???? ha ha ha...

Lot of fun for the Bus to try to ....go out of that historical area ...we lost almost 45 minutes .... too big the BUS
to transit ..... but finally the good driver was able to find the way ...without crashing any car .....hi!


Then we drove back to hotel to continue the conference, with the subject “The future of EDXC”.
Tibor started to say that he went to the Swedish DX Federation Annual General meeting earlier this year to make some PR for the EDXC, and to ask if there was a Swedish club that could organize an EDXC conference, but no club was interested. So cocretely NO POSSIBLE TO DO NEXT EDXC 2011 in Sweden.....

Tibor would then contact World Wide DX Club in Bad Homburg, Germany.... if they could arrange the a EDXC meeting in 2011. It was agreed by Tibor and Risto, that if the meeting should be held in Germany, it should not be such technical as it was in 2003 in Konigstein. The future meetings should be mixtures of lectures, debates and cultural sightseeing’s, as it has been the case for the last many years now. So ALSO THIS PROPOSAL did not OFFERED a positive solution ....to do next 2011 EDXC Meeting !!!

Then Risto Vahakainu of SDXL again analized the 3rd & the4th possibility for the meeting next year, being, Bulgaria, Lithuania..... He then raised the advantages and disadvantages for each country:
Vilnius in Lithuania was the preferred place, because Risto had some good contacts over there, and this was maybe the last chance we had to see the Sitkunai transmitter site, before it eventually will be closed down later in 2011.

Last proposal to be in Bulgaria had also its advantages; our club has some good contacts with our two Bulgarian members employed at Radio Bulgaria. The organizator should be by Pertti Hyvonen and his wife , they have an Hotel summer cottage in the village of Melnik south area not so far from border to Greece and Skopiera , so the meeting could done in a very quiet area, with good possibilities to do FM DXing However there were also some disadvantages, such as the distance to Sofia 140 km. A working group by Tibor, Risto and Arto was then arranged, in order to work for the possibilities as Vilnius for the meeting next year. There were some discussions of the date for the next meeting, but the solution was June 11-13 which is during the Whitsun.


After a long discussion about the 2 proposals ....Bulgaria or Lithuania, around 2000 hours all the participants and two representatives from TRT we had the Banquet Dinner at the Hotel Dedeman Restaurant. At the end of the banquet Tibor officially shortly closed this year’s conference and gave the word further to Risto, who was telling some funny stories mainly about his travelling around the world, and said that what he has seen those four days in Turkey, he fully would agree that Turkey should join the European Union. George Brown thanked TRT for their hospitality and so did I, saying that if TRT would continue with that speed of increasing languages in their foreign services, in a few years time they will be bigger and having more languages than Radio Japan and BBC.

The other large saloon restaurant at same floor had a big banquet free buffet for a Wedding ...with folk group dancers..... really attracting .... and very special adveniment tipically Turkish....

So now lets see the next 2011 EDXC organisation, to do it in Lithuania next June 2011.
