Ciao !
Sono felicemente arrivato a Catania oggi pomeriggio dopo
un viaggio di 90 minuti con Alitalia, nei quali ho ammirato il BEL PAESE
...visto dall'alto in effetti è molto bello... l'Appennino tutto bianco.... i
laghetti del Lazio.... la Costa Amalfitana... le Isole Eolie.
Il vulcanico Serginho che di recente ha eruttato lava e
lapilli per essere stato trattato male dal manager di una lista che si occupa di
Fari nella notte..... mi attendeva all'aereoporto di Fontanarossa .. un
tranquillo aereoporto .... ma fuori il traffico urbano era un inferno....
In serata ho ammirato le varie collezioni di Serginho...
radioline a transistor.... Matchboxes (fiammiferi di emittenti USA di 40-60 anni
fa... ancora funzionanti...gli accendini dorati !!!!) ed abbiamo anche testato
il ricevitore R-71 Icom.... ascoltando ARMCHAIR Radio Papua New Guinea 4890 kHz
alle 1930-2000 e non contenti abbiamo pure ascoltato Radio TaNpa da Tokyo su
3925 con una stronza utility sopra.
Per l'occasione abbiamo stappato un Nero d'Avola alla
faccia dei faialliti......
Più tardi ci trasferiamo ai 700 metri di quota di
Nicolosi sull'Etna per proseguire gli ascolti.....

I have happily landed in Sicily few
hours ago after a 90 minutes travel with Alitalia, the clear sky offered a good
glitterin skyline view of "IL BEL PAESE" the Appennini mountains with snow, the
lakes area in Lazio, the Amalfi coast , the Vesuvio with snow on the top, the
Eolie islands, with Stromboli active volcano smoking....
Volcanic Sergino Nuzzi was waiting my
arrival at the Fontanarossa airport very quiet ... but crossing Catania around
1800 hours is a shocking experience even if you are not the driver.... in
Catania there are a few semaphores.... so imagine what happen to cross the city
??? hi....
Later at Serginho home I admired his
collections of QSLs,Pennants, old bakelite portables transistors years
50's,60's,70's and the Matchboxes collection and some golden lightners from
Radio stations in USA.....
We also tested the ICOM R-71
Receiver Serginho utilize to do Beacon Dxing (recently he heard and verified a
Beacon in Estonia !!) so we get at armchair level 4890 kHz Papua New Guinea ,
and also Radio TaNpa Nikkei Radio on 3925 kHz with some noisy utility on.
So to celebrate the starting of the
first Volcano Dx Camp we drinked vine "NERO d'AVOLA"..... in the name of
Faialliti group.
Later we will move to Nicolosi place
for more listenings....

SECOND DAY :
Ciao !
giornata davvero movimentata....dopo una notte di
ascolti abbastanza gustosa che ha offerto sia onde medie che onde corte con
Serginho siamo saliti al rifugio Sapienza a quota 2300 metri, con un sole
sfavillante, ho così potuto toccare con occhio e con mano gli effetti devastanti
di 400 anni di eruzioni quasi continue....l'ultima riconoscibile dal colore
scuro della lava ha davvero fatto un macello fin verso quota 1800 metri.
Molti i turisti krukki che circolavano attorno alla zona
del rifugio Sapienza ora utilizzato da alcune emittenti FM ...con i loro
ripetitori..questo particolare per far capire che ....il denaro non conosce
ostacoli....la ricezione FM offriva ripetitori dalla piana di Catania fin verso
Vittoria e Siracusa ed anche dalla zona interna di Enna... ma purtroppo niente
Tropo FM ....TROPO PRESTO (TOO EARLY)
Un dettagliato Bandscan comparirà nell'archivio del
gruppo al mio rientro.
Tempo soleggiato....mentre in basso uno strato di
nuvolette tipo cotton fioc ... dava al panorama un aspetto davvero speciale
(tipo vista da un aereo in volo)

A real great day after a very
pleasant night of listening at 700 meters hills of Nicolosi of Etna, both MW and
SW with exciting catches.
We have visited the ruines of Rifugio
Sapienza at 2300 meters on Volcano Etna, with sunshine shining but quite freeze
wind, so I had the opportunity to touch with my eyes the terrics effects of the
last year 2003 july eruption which destroyed the Refuge buildings the Lava last
one erupted has more black color the Lava .... and arrived till 1800 meters of
higher...
But in 400 years the eruptions
arrived till the sea 3 times !!!!
A lot of foreign tourists with mega
bus was everythere... cheating and doing photos.. so we started our FM Bandscan
with my Sangean ATS 909 equipped with 2 fm filters 80 kHz. The RF at that
listening point was very high due to 4 repeaters of 4 networks...located on the
building ruined by the eruption... blasting on some frequencies.... we got
signals so far from Siracusa and Enna ..... but nothing from Messina.... and
naturally no tropo conditions.... hi....TROPO too early..sorry
As said was sunny over a low strait
of white cotton fioc clouds ...like to be on an air flight...
I am now at Nuzzi home at computer
and sooner we will do our second Dx night.... later on the details....

nottata davvero indimenticabile quella appena
trascorsa.....
L'apertura infatti è iniziata con varie Peruane in onde
corte poi proseguita con segnali Brasiliani straordinari fin sopra ai 25 metri
11925 Bandeirantes che per una volta copriva i Cinesi di Taiwan.... Radio
Victoria da Lima sia su 9720,0 in // con 6020,2 con i soliti venditori da
baracconi di Miracoli viventi.... R. Nacional Brasilia su 11780 in //con 6180
kHz ..... 6173,8 Radio Tawantinsuyo di Cusco con pubblicità di Cusco ( occhio
agli errori di battitura doctor Manhattanintelcul !!!) dopo le 0115 su 6035 la
Colombiana La Voz del Guaviare era molto ben ricevibile.....e subito dopo di
nuovo il Paraguay su 9736,8 veniva ricevuto abbastanza chiaramente ma con un
programma dedicato agli attentati di Madrid dello scorso 11 Marzo.
Dopo le 0145 la nostra attenzione veniva decisamente
attratta da una strana lingua su 1660 kHz.....pareva Asiatica....ma si era
proprio in Koreano !!!! WWRU Elizabeth NJ (Ex Radio Unica) con un simpatico DJ
che presentava musica moderna rocchettara Koreana !! poi comparivano sempre
nella X-band USA altre emittenti (see log down here) fino alle
ore 0518 UTC .....con sprazzi di segnali fluttuanti fino
a 9+20 db a tratti su 1620 Virgin Isl., 1640 WDRW Georgia , 1650 WHKT Virginia
Radio Disney , 1660 WCZN Florida si sostituiva ai Koreani del New Jersey....con
segnali impressionanti per 2 ore ....incredibbile !!!
cocktail su 1700 tra il Tegasasso KQKX Brownsville e
Florida (debole) di WJCC Radio Luz emittente in Spagnolo con musica religiosa...
Unico canale coperto era 1680 dove un rumore simile ad
un
mietitrebbia con motore ingolfato ha bloccato l'ascolto.
L'uso del FRT7700 accordatore antenna sull'Icom R-71/E
di Serginho Nuzzi è stato formidabile !!!! il dipolo 49 metri ottimo per le
corte, la filare 60 metri valida sulle medie....

on SW, till 25 mb with Radio Bandeirantes 11925 over Radio BCC Taiwan usually
dominant...Radio Victoria Peru on both 9720 & 6020,2 ..... Radio Nacional
Brasilia on 11780 & 6180 ..... Peruvian Tawantinsuyo from Cusco on 6173,8
(Faiallaro attention to your printing mistakes ..... 6035 good clear La Voz del
Guaviare Colombian around 0115 hours....9736,8 Radio Nacional Paraguay again
with good signals with a program live from Madrid about the islamic bombs in
Atocha Madrid of 11 march.....after 0145 hours our attention was captured by a
strange language on 1660 kHz.... seeming Asiatic.... Yes indeed Korean
language !!!! WRRU Elizabeth NJ (Ex Radio Unica) with modern korean rock
music!!!!!
Soon the X-band was full of signals
from the States...making us euphoric....see dxlog pls... with signals up/down
till 0518 UTC

of Korean station from New Jersey....with strongs peaks for 2 hours

KQKX Brownsville Texas & Florida (more weak) WJCC Radio Luz Religious Station in
Spanish language....only on 1680 kHz nothing was able to break the horrible
noise look like a machinary to cut the mais with some problem to his motor...hi.
The utilisation of the FRT 7700
resulted very important !! 49 meters dipole good for SW , the 60 meters wire
outdoor very useful for MW.... after 30 years of listenings Serginho is a real
expert....

CAMP NUMERO 2 VOLCAN ETNA .....
Palermo ha subito fatto capire di essere la capitale
della Sicilia con un mega ingorgo stradale in Via Oreto... bloccata per 30
minuti minghia pareva Via Monteceneri a Milano ....hi

The arrival in Palermo of the Bus was
celebrated by a giant mega chaos traffic stop in Via Oreto ..... 30 minutes stop
.... hi.... this naturally is a normal situation comedy in Palermo.... hi ..but
not for me... remembering the same situation every morning in Milano in the area
of the ghisolfa bridge after Via Monteceneri... hi

Eccomi con il prosieguo delle mie avventure DX in
Sicilia.
Venerdì scorso 19 marzo dopo essere arrivato a Palermo
ed essermi sistemato all'Hotel Bostòn (notare l'accento) ho fatto un salto
all'internet point AEXIS !!!!di Via Maqueda 353, molto ben organizzato !! poi in
una bolgia di traffico infernale ..... ho incontrato Bob ed ho passato la serata
con lui ..... abbiamo anche fatto una visita ad un buon posto per provare la FM
.... ma ovviamente la propagazione non era positiva almeno sulla banda FM ,
meglio sulle medie e sulle corte con ATS 909, comprese le pirlate Greche che
perseguitano pure qui .... inoltre 1287 kHz Galei Zahal da Israele arrivava pure
qui.....
Sabato provavo con successo una incursione mattutina
alla sede di Radio Margherita dove incontravo Dario e con lui passavo alcune ore
..... avendo cura di prelevare alcuni KILI di adesivi di Radio Margherita con
frequenze di varie località.....
Sempre sabato poi mi spostavo con il bus 107 cambiando
allo Stadio con il 731 arrivavo proprio nello stesso punto del lungomare zona
ARENELLA piazzetta Vergine Maria dove fa capolinea il 731.
Potevo così fare un bandscan FM .... che al 90% concide
con quello pubblicato da Bob Lupara sul suo sito : http://www.bclnews.it
Le differenze erano dovute a Radio Donna spenta e da
Radio Arcobaleno su 87,90 MHz da Monte Cammarata....(Agrigento) ...non sappiamo
che giro abbia fatto dato che solo aggirando Monte Pellegrino poteva
arrivare..... a meno che sia un ripetitore ...segreto per Mondello ?
Di nuovo dovevo constatare che la propagazione Tropo era
assente....peccato....
Sabato sera a casa di Bob Lupara ho potuto ammirare la
sua collezione di conferme ricevute in 15 anni di gloriosa carriera .
Domenica 21 la primavera è arrivata anche qui ed ho
seguito il
consiglio di andare a vedere Sciacca Terme sulla costa
SUD della Sicilia, l'autobus della SAIS diretto in 1 ora 40 minuti con 9,40 Euro
(andata e ritorno) permette un viaggio molto bello paesaggistaicamente, la Piana
degli Albanesi è davvero piana e gialla di zagare ... molte mucche pezzate ....
tutto coltivato .... l'autostrada è GRATUITA !!! in tutta la Sicilia (tranne il
tratto Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto-Messina) (free toll on all HIGH WAYS in Sicily
!!!)
Sciacca Terme è una località turistica molto bella ed ha
diversi lungomare sopraelevati sulle scogliere con molti gabbiani, ed una brezza
da Sud Ovest .... ho trovato un giardinetto ed ho fatto il bandscan partendo
dall'elenco del "fido" Bob .... ed ho fatto bene dato che al 80% il suo era
esatto.... ma come spesso accade è sufficente spostarsi di 500 metri e si
sentono altre emittenti locali (in questo caso arrivavano ripetitori dalla zona
di Agrigento , da Est, che dalla abitazione di Bob non si sentono di solito....)
Le cose + interessanti in FM sono state : 89,80 MHz un
forte segnale dalla Tunisia in // 684 kHz , sui 92,00 MHz poi notavo Radio
Tunisi Chaine Internationale in // con 963 kHz (in Italiano alle 1500-1600
locali, il notiziario è in onda alle ore 1530 ) , Malta 999 kHz sulle medie con
un segnalino niente di speciale , in FM 91,70 MHz FM Bronja , 101 Radio 101
(grazie al fatto che il ripetitore di Radio SIS (emittente di Catania che ha
ripetitori in tutta la Sicilia) sui 101 MHz era OFF (questo fatto in Italia
capita spesso ed è come il sale sul pane per rendere l'FM Dx + interessante),
101,80 MHz Islands Sound Radio una bella radio Maltese con un grande Dj tipo
caraibico e
molti Jingles....... ma la propagazione non era molto
propensa a ricezioni TROPO ..... ma chi si contenta ......
Sulle medie poi constatavo con mia sorpresa che si
sentivano varie emittenti dalla Spagna , tra le 1330 e 1530 locali : 558 kHz RNE
R.5 Valencia in // con 576 kHz RNE R.5 Barcellona , 738 kHz RNE R.1 Barcellona
in // con 774 kHz RNE R.1 Valencia & 855 kHz RNE R.1 Murcia (oltre 2000 Km
!!!!) , la cosa + curiosa Radio Cope Barcellona 783 kHz comprensibile.
Per il resto 531 kHz Algeria; 585 kHz Tunisia //603 kHz
// 630 kHz (fortissima) & // 684 kHz ; 675 kHz Libia // 711 kHz & //972 kHz & //
1053 kHz (fortissima) //1251 kHz.
La Tunisia su 720 kHz Radio Sfax (servizio regionale)
continua ad essere spenta.
Tutti gli ascolti fatti con Sangean ATS 909 con 2 filtri
da 80 kHz Murata per FM.
Rientravo a Palermo in allegra compagnia con una marea
di Studenti che dopo il weekend rientravano a Palermo.
Una bella giornata .... da ricordare.

Here the Sicily Tour Spring 2004 goes
on .... friday 19 March after my arrival to Termini Bus station I took a taxi to
go to the Hotel , in 5 minutes I arrived to the Hotel Bostòn (look at accent) in
Via Mariano Stabile 136 , WEB info http://www.hotelsmadonia.it E-mail :
direzione@hotelsMadonia.it In the same building are located 3 Hotels operated
by same company. Cost 50 Euro per day and breakfast.
The position of the Hotel is very
centric and near Piazza Castelnuovo(Politeama Theater square). So I went to an
Internet Point AEXIS !! discovered by chanche in Via Maqueda 353, modern and
clean with 20 computers.
At around 1800 hours in a total chaos
traffic I met Bob Lupara Scaglione and I spent the whole evening with
him...later in the night he show to me a good listening place to try FM
reception, but again no tropo conditions ....a bit better on MW & SW bands
with the ATS 909 of Bob,
apart the terribles Greek pirates
X-bands breaking the balls also in Palarmo gulf !!!....on 1287 kHz Galei Zahal
Israel Armed Forced was heard with good signals (no Spain Ser ) .....
Saturday morning 20 march I started
the day with a positive visit to Radio Margherita offices, naturally after a
phonecall to them.
I met Dario the program manager, with
him I stay some hours.... and most pleasant was to get many Kilos of STIXS of
the differents Radio Margherita stations operating in Italy, which surely will
go to the many of my traders stickers worldwide....
Around midday I took the bus line 107
till the Stadium of Palermo team (going very well in the second division as
leader...) and I changed for bus 139 and later for bus line 731 till its
headline located in Arenella coast area of Palermo, in little square Vergine
Maria, exactly the same place I had the night listening with Bob..... so I had
plenty time to do a local FM bandscan..... however need to say 90 % of it was
same as the one given to me by Bob Lupara, which is free available visiting his
good WEB site : http://www.bclnews.it The only differences was to the off
service of Radio Donna & a signal of Radio Arcobaleno 87,90 MHz from Monte
Cammarata....Agrigento....no ideas how the signals may arrived there....being my
listening place was on the other side.....of the Sicily coast......may be a
pirate repeater for Arenella-Mondello area???? who knows ????
Later the same evening I had another
meeting at the home of Bob Lupara. So I had the opportunity to look at the good
QSL collection received by him in 15 years of glorious activity as BCL
listener.
Sunday 21 march the Spring time was
in the Conca d'Oro (as it is called the gulf of Palermo) and thanks the good
suggestion of Bob I decided to go to see Sciacca Terme on the south coast of
Sicily.
There is a very good Bus service
direct line of Autolinee Gallo, for 9,40 Euro you go/back ticket. The Bus start
near Termini Rail Station square,
Via Portello 32/a. Very nice to see
the panorama in the Piana degli Albanesi all yellow by the zagare flowers...
with many caws ....lot of cultivations....lot of hill and strange mountains
.....we started at 1030 hours and arrived near the central square of Sciacca
Terme at 1230.
I found a garden square with one
palmtree very high, and sit down there I started my FM/AM bandscan with my ATS
909 Sangean.
I utilized the FM Bandscan of Bob
Lupara and really good basic informations cause 80% was perfect, the difference
was more stations coming from Agrigento (located more eastern on the coast)
this cause the listening place of Bob was 500 meter most western and in the
central part of the city of Sciacca where he has an house.
So you may realize listening to FM it
is sufficent to change a little the listening place and you have differents
results.
Need to add, in march the TROPO
propagation is almost unexistent, so I just get 4 signals from Tunisia and 4
from Malta.... but in summertime there are more than 50 channels from
Tunisia,Malta and Libia.... you may see the Bandscan in the WEB :

Most interesting catches for me has
been : 89,80 MHz Tunisian Home service station in // 684 kHz , 92,00 MHz Radio
Tunisi International in // 963 kHz , at 1500-1600 local time in Italian, the
news at 1530 ;
Radio Malta 1 on 999 kHz with quite
poor signal, more Maltese stations on FM : Radio Bronja 91,70 MHz , Radio 101 on
101 Mhz (cause that sunday it was off Radio SIS on 101 Mhz) ; Radio Island Sound
101,80 Mhz with good programs with Caribbean DJ and nice Jingles....
Nothing more ...but surely better
than nothing.... hi
Quite a surprise to listen at
1330-1530 hours some Spanish medium wave stations.....558 kHz R.5 Valencia in
// 576 kHz R.5 Barcelona (on sunday no local programs in the afternoon) and
738 kHz RNE Barcelona in // 774 kHz RNE Valencia , in // with 855 kHz RNE
Murcia (2000 km !!) even Cope Barcelona 783 kHz was heard in my ATS 909 with
quite clear signal..... From Africa : 531 kHz Algeria; 585 kHz Tunisia // 603
kHz // 630 kHz (strong !!!!) & // 684 kHz ; 675 kHz Libia // 711 kHz & // 972
kHz & // 1053 kHz (strong!!!!!) // 1251 kHz.
Regional Tunisia 720 kHz Radio Sfax
continue to be off the air.
I also tested the listening on the
square in front the thermes house, right on the panoramic view of the sea, very
nice indeed, but less protected from Agrigento repeaters located atop Monte
Cammarata...
so less interesting for DXing
purposes on FM band.... with many sea birds floating on the gulf ... over the
rockies.... you must test it ...with the sunset ..... a great place to be in
summer time....
At 1630 I started the back travel
with lot of students returning to Palermo after a weekend spent at their homes
in the Sciacca area.
The good spirit to remember a very
particular experience for me.....

riprendo e concludo il reportage Siciliano. Lunedi 21
marzo, ho dedicato la giornata al giro delle emittenti di Palermo, mentre stavo
per uscire una telefonata inattesa da Maurizio Campanella di Termini Imerese, mi
annunciava la sua presenza in città.
Decidevamo di andare a Radio Margherita, che Maurizio
non aveva visitato. Li incontravamo l'indaffaratissimo tuttofare Dario, sempre
disponibile a visitatori desiderosi di vedere gli studi, dopo previa telefonata:
091 302712. La sede è in Via Marchese di Villabianca 82,
all'8° piano. dove operano ben 3 emittenti :103,70 MHz Radio Arcobaleno
(circuito regionale);105,70 MHz Radio Nostalgia (emittente locale);e 106,00 MHz
Radio Margherita (cicuito nazionale).

L'emittente ha ripetitori in tutta Italia.
Maurizio si interessa di ricezione in FM ed ha fatto
interessanti ascolti dal Monte Milocco, 1500 metri e situato nell'interno della
zona costiera di Termini Imerese dove abita, con un Sangean ATS 909 , ora
equipaggiato con filtri Fm Murata da 80 kHz e da 100 kHz. Che ne hanno
migliorato la sensibilità.
Tale bandscan verrà presto inserito nell'archivio di
Playdx Yahoo Group, e dimostra che da tale punto di ascolto si può ricevere
regolarmente (senza particolari condizioni favorevoli), emittenti della
Lazio,Campania,Calabria,Sardegna....
Nel periodo estivo certamente si avranno ricezioni più a
lunga distanza grazie alla Tropo in FM.
Ci salutavamo all'uscita da Radio Margherita
ripromettendoci di fare nella mia prossima visita in Sicilia un bandscan in FM
insieme.
Io proseguivo il mio giro utilizzando gli Autobus ed
avendo come riferimento il Tutto città di Palermo prezioso libretto che vi
consiglio di usare, un biglietto del bus costa 1 Euro e vale per 2 ore. Con il
107 cambiando poi allo Stadio per il 662 arrivavo vicino a via Praga 65 dove ha
sede Radio Action, storica emittente di Palermo operante su 101,25 MHz ....purtroppo
ormai ridotta ad una No stop music .... deprimente... qui trovavo una signora
che usciva e così superavo la prima barriera per entrare nell'edificio (senza
portineria) e salito al 5°piano notavo un "vetusto" adesivo risalente agli anni
90 ...
suonavo e mi apriva un nerboruto personaggio .... il
quale in 15 secondi mi liquidava (senza togliere la catena di sicurezza della
porta) dicendomi , non abbiamo adesivi, sono solo, mi telefoni per un
appuntamento....091 6702909 venivo poi a sapere che quello è il proprietario
UNICO dell'emittente.... situata in casa sua....
Proseguivo il giro e prendevo il bus 544 che passa nella
vicina Via Strasburgo e dal bus ammiravo la sede RAI della SICILIA sita al
numero 19 e scendevo in Via Borremans angolo Galilei.... ma qui scoprivo che
tale Via è a senzo unico.... e che pertanto mi attendeva una bella scarpinata
fino al civico 163 !!! dove trovavo Radio Time & Studio Sicar 94,00 MHz & 92,30
MHz

altre 2 emittenti storiche di Palermo, l'accoglienza era
molto positiva , Enrico "Enricuccio Zito" Mosca,mi invitava a visitare gli
studi, ma gli edesivi erano all'ufficio pubblicitario. 091 6254343. Via del
Quarnaro 14. Emittente musicale moderna e con notiziari,Radio Time ha degli
ottimi studi e non occorre telefonare prima di visitarla.... Prendevo poi il bus
111 ed arrivato al capolinea (vicino) in Piazza John Lennon, cambiavo con il Bus
134 su suggerimento dei gentili autisti che facevano sosta ai 30 !! bus che li
fanno capolinea.... e cambiavo di nuovo per prendere il bus 442.... che però si
faceva vivo dopo 45 minuti !!!! per mia fortuna l'attesa era allietata da una
panchina verde in acciaio con pensilina all'ombra (il sole era uscito e
picchiava) .... evidentemente i passaggi della linea 442 sono "saltuari"...
Finalmente prendevo il 442 e scendevo in Via Nazario
Sauro 16 dove al piano terra di un edificio centenario hanno sede 2 simpatiche e
ruspanti emittenti locali Radio Battikuore 95,50 MHz e Radio Mia 98,60 MHz ....
il proprietario era in diretta con alcuni alunni locali nel programma
pomeridiano dedicato ai bambini ed alle loro problematiche scolastiche.....
dunque una emittente vecchia maniera. Purtroppo adesivi esauriti, ma molta
gentilezza da parte del proprietario Giovanni Tiziano, WEB :

Il tempo era trascorso abbastanza rapidamente tra un
autobus ed un altro e visto che erano le 1630 rientravo in albergo.....con il
110 fino alla stazione Termini poi con il 122 che è l'unico bus che passa in Via
Mariano Stabile e si ferma di fronte all'Hotel Bostòn.... comodo ma sempre IPER
affollato l'autobus naturalmente .....hi... il traffico era in usuale
ebollizione pomeridiana e per fare 2 kilometri ci impiegavo 40 minuti....
In serata mi ritrovavo con Roberto Scaglione e con lui
passavo ore al computer a casa sua.... poi gentilmente mi faceva fare un giro di
Palermo by night visitando in auto i monumenti più interessanti e storici della
città,
cosa che di giorno avrebbe richiesto sicuramente 3-4
giornate ...dato il traffico sempre troppo esagerato....andavamo anche a
Monreale...dove il Duomo illuminato in modo geniale ...vi assicuro che è uno
spettacolo indimenticabile....
Martedì 23 marzo decidevo di andare a Marsala per
incontrare l'amico Gioacchino Stallone che vive li, gli Autoservizi Salemi in 2
ore e 30 minuti portano da Palermo a Marsala.... per 12,40 Euro andata e
ritorno...
Minacciose nuvole nere facevano presagire una giornata
inclemente....
appena usciti da Palermo in direzione di Punta Raisi,
notavo che durante il pasaggio dalla località di Isola delle Femmine l'autoradio
dell'autobus che (purtroppo) era sintonizzata su RTL 102,50 MHZ che modula su
99,20 MHz dal Monte Pellegrino.... spariva completamente ....pertanto quella
zona risulta davvero schermata dalla foresta di antenne che sono dislocate su
tale posizione dominante Palermo.... e vale la pena se vi capitasse
l'opportunità di fare delle prove di ascolto in FM da li.
Panorami molto belli della costa e delle colline per
tutto il viaggio, con scrosci di pioggia ..... l'attraversamento di Milazzo era
davvero simile a quello di una località della Grecia sulla linea interna tra
Salonicco e Patrasso con strade strette... Milazzo è come era 10 secoli fa....
In perfetto orario arrivavo alle 1330 a Marsala.... qui
trovavo Gioacchino che mi faceva tante feste.... con lui raggiungevo il
quartiere Sappusi posto ad ovest della città dove un tempo c'erano solo saline,
il bus 304 fa tale servizio. Facevamo un bandscan in FM ma con mia grande
delusione non ascoltavo nessuna emittente della Tunisia... anche se dato il
tempo tempestoso... c'era da aspettarselo.... la stessa cosa capita a Rimini con
un giorno di pioggia...non si sente neanche Radio Koper da Monte Nanos con 80 kW.....
eppure il posto deve essere buono per fare E-sporadici in FM ... dato che solo
20 emittenti hanno postazioni in zona....
Dopo aver gustato alcuni bicchieri di buon Marsala ed
aver ricevuto in regalo una pregiata bottiglia di Marsala... ricevevo vari
gadgeds di Radio Antenna del Boeo l'emittente più famosa della zona alla quale
Gioacchino collabora con un programma dedicato al radioascolto, anche se in modo
saltuario. Ringraziavo la Signora Stallone per l'accoglienza e grazie ad un
passaggio in auto della sorella di Gioacchino venivano depositati sul lungomare
del Capo Boeo.... con un vento simile a quello che vi capita di solito se
passate da Norkkopping in Svezia... non solo per forza ... ma per il FREDDO !!!
incredibile ero nel punto più sud occidentale della Sicilia e c'erano 11°gradi
... con un vento che ne faceva sentire 7°....
Sulle medie poi notavo i buoni segnali delle emittenti
Spagnole... di Barcellona,Valencia e soprattutto Murcia ..... evidentemente
Marsala ha vista ottica con la Spagna.....
Purtroppo però di colpo nonostante ci fosse il sole...
si è messo a GRANDINARE !!! e siamo fuggiti sotto ad un porticato e poi ...il
vento impetuoso (proveniente direttamente dal polo nord ??) ci ha ...sospinti in
una pasticceria bar ..... Bar Pasticceria Saviny (Piazza Lombardo Piemonte
25/f)
Qui Gioacchino mi offriva due fette gigantesche di
Cassata Siciliana di Marsala ...... che io divoravo con gusto in un
battibaleno....
Parlavamo poi di emittenti Radio, locali,nazionali ed
internazionali e della attività locale del gruppo di ascolto che Gioacchino
dirige e che vede 10 iscritti della provincia di Marsala e che si limita a dare
notizie sulle emittenti in Italiano (la lingua inglese non è il forte di
Gioacchino)
Se comunque avrete l'occasione di visitare Marsala

ripensando che se avevo fatto piovere a Las Palmas , il
mio potere tuamatirgico di far piovere quasi ovunque stava aumentando.... ha ha
ha.
In serata rivedevo Roberto Scaglione a casa sua dove
gustavo un piatto di Passata di Carciofini al forno....indimenticabili....
Nonostante tutti gli impegni dell'attività frenetica di
Direttore Tecnico di 2 emittenti televisive e di Web manager di 3 siti su
Internet, Roberto mi aveva splendidamente assistito durante il mio soggiorno a
Palermo, e di questo gliene sono molto riconoscente.
Sicuramente ci saranno altre occasioni per visitare la
Sicilia e di fare qualche bandscan in FM insieme a lui.....magari nel periodo
estivo quando la banda FM diventa una miniera di segnali....
Mercoledi 24 marzo prendevo il bus per l'aereoporto che
fa una fermata in Piazza Verdi e con 4,80 Euro arrivavo all'aereoporto verso le
1100....
Nessun problema all'imbarco alle 1300 per Milano Linate,
una turista pacioccona studentessa Inglese era al mio lato,100 kili.. ma dato
che l'aereo era semideserto (come al solito l'Alitalia non vola mai al completo)
si spostava .... anche a causa di alcuni miei SOFT BBBBBRRRRPPPP e
SFFFFOOUUUFFFF interni (i carciofini .....) ed il viaggio avveniva nel
migliore dei modi...o potevo ... ronfare placidamente....hi !

him, cause he was in Palermo that morning and he wanted to meet me. So he
quickly arrived at Hotel Bostòn and we moved to go to Radio Margherita offices
cause Maurizio was interested to visit them, and the gentlemen Dario confirmed
the meeting after a phonecall.

Maurizio is very interested to FM
DXing and he kindly given to me a list of his catches from Monte Milocco a
dominant position at 1500 meters, back the Termini Imerese town where he lives,
this place result protected from signals from Monte Pellegrino (Palermo) and so
he listened stations from Lazio,Campania,Calabria and Sardegna..... and imagine
with no particular TROPO FM conditions..... you may find this bandscan in the

He also utilize a Sangean ATS 909
receiver equipped with 2 FM filters Murata 80 kHz wide.
So we talked lot about FM dxing and
radio stations in Sicily...and we say see you again in my next visit to Sicily
hoping to have the possibility to do an FM Band scan together.
After having let Maurizio and the
friendly Radio Margherita staff I continued around 1100 hours my tour with the
Palermo Public Bus service 1 Euro a ticket for 2 hours, and a map of service
printed on Tutto Città booklet. Bus 107 till Stadio for Bus 662 till Via Praga
65.

101,25 Mhz an historical voice of Palermo in FM ....but now just non stop music
, the building has no control desk... but a lady going out let me going in, at
5th floor I found the door with an old (15 almost years) sticker sticked on the
door....but yet in my 245000 stickers collection.
After my drinnnn to the door a
troglodite man opened (not without a circonspection care.... and in 15 seconds
eliminated my attemp....
WE DON'T HAVE STICKERS , I AM ALONE
NOW , PHONE FOR A MEETING 091 6702909..... really disappointing ....hi... may
be he was eating a "caponata" ..... ha ha ha.... in effect many radio in Italy
are often "one man radio" ....so don't be surprised to read this happening...
Next I took Bus 544 in nearer Via
Strasburgo and from the Bus I had the chanche to see the modern building of RAI
SICILIA at Via Strasburgo 19, so I arrived at bus stop Via Borremans corner
Galilei .... but I had here the discovery Via Galilei is one way....hi.... so I
needed to do a ....walk of 700 meters till Galilei 163 where is located Radio
Time 94,00 MHz and Studio Sicar 92,30 MHz, other 2 historical radio stations in

friendly showed the studios all computerized and with lot of colors and
photos.... but no stickers....... they keep them in their advertising office

In Via Galilei I took bus 111 till
the headline in Square John Lennon there stops 30 Bus lines and I changed with
Bus 134 thanks the information of some Bus drivers..... to keep after 5 stops
Bus 442....
Unfortunatly this Bus is quite
irregular and only after 45 minutes I get it....luckly a good ironed green chair
at stop bus at shadow from a shining sun permitted a quiet waiting ..... so I
arrived at Via Nazario Sauro 16 there is located Radio Mia 98,60 MHz and Radio
Battikuore 95,50 MHz , two popular stations OLD STYLE , with lot of dedications
and live programs with the listeners. The owner Giovanni Tiziano was live on air
in the studios ....
with some schools pupils with a
program devoted to "after school" ....
Unfortunatly no stickers, the station
recently joined the syndication station FM ITALIA (headquarters in Siracusa of
Sicily).

After this visit I needed to keep
again the "phantom" Bus 442.... with some "battikuore" hi ! ....but with all my
surprise after 2 minutes wait one arrived ....with just the driver....incredible
service .... hi....
So at headline bus stop in Piazza
Camporeale I changed for Bus 110 to arrive near Archivescovado area, in Via
Matteo Bandello 2 where is located Radio Spazio Noi the Christian voice of
Palermo, now in the network IN BLU RADIO (headquarters in Milano at Avvenire
newspaper building)

However no possible to see the studios and just the depliants of IN BLU RADIO
network.....
Time was runing and being 1630 hours
I choose to come back to my hotel , so I kept again Bus 110 till headline at
Termini Rail station square and changed for Bus 122 the one Bus passing in the
street of my hotel.... the traffic was starting to be again chaotic in the city
as every evening after 1700 hours.... but if you find a place to sit down in
the Bus ....you may even enjoy the shops panoramics .... one shop offering
"Quadri non di autore" ... second hands paintings.... may be ...good copies
....hi !!!......
The evening I had another meeting
with Bob Lupara at his house looking at the computer what's going on..... at
around 0100 hours he offered a "free tour" of Palermo monuments by his
car....same tour during daytime should have been absolutely impossible...for the
terrific jam traffic.... Palermo by night is surely fashinating and most
exciting to see the Monreale Duomo really precious souvenir of the Normans
domination of the Sicily in the Meaddle age.... a place to see if you want to do
a travel in Sicily (after the Volcano Etna please)......
The glittering skyline view of
Palermo from the Belvedere of Monreale at night is another great free show to be
seen.
Tuesday 22 march I already planned to
go to Marsala by Bus line Salemi in 2 hours 30 minutes permit you to arrive to
the most south west part of the Sicily, cost 12,40 Euro go/back same
day....really cheap price !!! The weather unfortunatly this morning was yet
dark and cloudy in Palermo and after Punta Raisi lot of rainfalls arrived on us.
I started the Bus travel at 1100
hours from departure near the Termini central rail station square, not so many
travellers to Marsala ....
The bus driver was a fan of RTL
102,50 Mhz which is modulating from Monte Pellegrino repeater on 99,20 MHz ... a
real torture for the passengers ....hi !! But interesting to remark after the
Tunnel to arrive in the Isola delle Femmine town (on the high way for Trapani)
for 5 Km the "noisy" RTL 102,5 MHz disappeared .... so this coast place must be
an interesting place to "test" FM TROPO reception.... cause seems it is a dark
area for the many repeaters located atop Monte Pellegrino....
So next visit I will do I will try to
go there to do a bandscan in Isola delle Femmine sea side coast......
The panorama of the coast and the
rocky mountains during the travel has been very unforgottables Pizzo Montanello
before Castellammare del Golfo....for exemple.... after having crossed the
Madonie mountains the bus stopped in Mazara del Vallo (fishing sea port) the
town is look like an old XII Greek village with streets so little the bus driver
was a real funambolist of the crossing..... hi... so finally I arrived at
Marsala ... the most western part of Sicily .... and I met my local friend
Gioacchino Stallone who naturally made me lot of great kisses .... with his
smiling face ... we arrived at the central bus square departure to keep the
local bus 304 which is the only way to arrive at Sappusi area , located 5 Km
from the city, to the western, an area before full of salinas "salt" mines.....
May be I have not had clear the
geografical position of Marsala town ... and I done with Gioacchino an FM
Bandscan ... but just got 20 stations in a real ... for me ....desert FM
dial...... no traces of Tunisia ....
Well in fact this is cause Marsala
look at west - north west .... and Tunisia is most south eat respect the
listening position.... the plate level of the area (1 meter above sea level)
also is surely another problem so ...... I realized Marsala is a good place for
ES in FM during summer time .... but .... quite empty of Tropo signals .... hi
However Gioacchino's mother kindly
given me some glasses of local famous wine Marsala Florio and some cakes....
Gioacchino given to me stickers of
most important local radio-tv station called Radio Antenna del Boeo (Boeo is the
name of the cape on the coast of Marsala town) and he is a collaborator with an
irregular program devoted to the listeners of distant signals.
After having thanked Mrs. Stallone we
utilized the kind assistence of the sister of Gioacchino who has a car and
we were translated on the seaside street of Marsala near the port area, there
are located also some pankchairs..... and we started another FM Bandscan
......again with very depressing result.... same 20 stations heard... but even
worse... with a "GLACIAL" wind blowing from north west .... and black clouds on
our head.... hi (such wind remembered me my visit to Norkopping in Sweden
!!!!!!!!! some 10 years before .....BRRRRRRRR...terrific .....)
So I only wanted to test with my ATS
909 (too freezy in my hands) .... the MW band
and ohhhh boys .... which surprise to
hear MANY Catalan and Spanish stations !!!
with good signals !!! (for details
look at the info written in Sciacca Terme visit)
but signals almost 3 times more
strong !!!!! So Marsala has good options to get Super Tropo FM receptions....of
corse in summer time........
But .... while I was carefully
controlling MW .... it started to fall "granizos" on our head.... icestorm
...rain .... so we escaped rapidly ..... rapido rapido .... ha ha ha
under a large portic of a big home
.... and the wind blowing .... put us directly into the Bar Pasticceria Saviny
(Piazza Lombardo Piemonte 25/f) in front of the sea port boulevard with palm
trees.... bent by the hurricane which arrived suddenly.......hi
So Gioacchino kindly offered to me 2
giant Cassata Siciliana di Marsala for me.... cost 2,10 Euro each .... but
really giant and esquisite ....for my taste......
If you will ever visit Marsala don't
forget to test Pasticceria Saviny !!!!!!
So we talked about our common hobby
"listening" radio signals and the local Dx club run by Gioacchino Stallone and
with 10 members almost completly devoted to Italian international radiostations,
(Gioacchino doesn't speak English)

Bus Salemi departure point and under another stonegrain rain and hurricane wind
"bufera!!!".... I let my good friend Gioacchino thanking him for the good
friendly meeting and for the precious Marsala bottle he kindly given me as final
souvenir present of the historical meeting....
While I was leaving I seriousely
started to think if I has been able to carry the rain in Las Palmas (Canarias)
and also the snow in Ragusa (Sicily) some years ago my thaumaturgic power to
make start to rain in places usually very dry...... is still quite powerfull
..... so dear readers if you live in a very very dry area... you may invite me
to visit you .... just pay my travel fees..... ha ha ha ha ha ha ........

kept me at my back arrival in Palermo around 1945 hours under a thin and freezy
rain ..... I spent another evening at his house.
His mother is a great cooker and I
had an esquisite plate of Passata al forno di Carciofini Siciliani....really

general manager of 2 televisions and 2 radio stations and being the Web master
of 3 Web sites , Bob has been really a perfect assistant for my time spent in

The morning of the 24 march Wednesday

The Bus line to go to Airport has a
stop in Piazza Verdi side hotels and for 4,80 Euro oneway you arrive in 40
minutes to the Punta Raisi airport, the sea force 8 ...mugging was another
spectacle to be seen that morning ... even if not so rainy.
No problems at all at the boarding,
at 1300 hours .... my usual place near the window was ready .... I only had a
"pacioccona" student Scottish girl (over 100 kilos) as companion at my side
....till I started some soft ....buuuurrrpppp...and fffffllllllluuuufffff.... so
she decided to change place ....for a less noisy place.... you know Alitalia
flights are always half .... full .... hi ......
Atop 8000 meters the usual for me
panoramic view of white broccoli clouds .... and the mediterranean sea ....at
times ...so the rolling finally effected me and I started a very quiet sleeping
.... and .....snoring .... ha ha ha ......
Next travel at end of May in
Toscana/Elba Island...for FM TROPO DXing
